An exclusion is when the insurer places a clause in their contract stating that they will not pay the insured value if the claim came about as a result of:
- Self inflicted damage or death
- Illegal activities
- Non-discloser
- Pre-existing conditions.
It is very common for insurance companies to have exclusion clauses for claims that come about as a result of hazardous occupations and extreme sports. There can be exclusions to death claims, disability payments and medical aid costs.
Think of these scenarios:
- A person has a skydiving accident that requires R250,000 worth of medical costs. Their medical aid might not pay that figure because they exclude payments to injury as a result of skydiving. Do you have that amount of liquid cash?
- A person has a bank loan to his business of R5,000,000. He has ceded a life insurance policy to the bank for this amount. He dies in a microlighting accident but the insurer will not pay his creditors because they exclude claims as a result of aviation. In all likelihood his estate will be liquidated and his family will be left destitute.
The majority of extreme sportsmen are not aware that their policies have exclusions. This means that they will not get paid and that they might be wasting their hard earned money on policies that do not protect them.
Most of our clients have had exclusions when we first met with them, but they are now fully covered for their sports. Are you 100% sure that your sports are not excluded from your policies? Contact Extreme Insurance to have total peace of mind.
